Andy Samberg has performed so many hilarious skits during his time on Saturday Night Live. However, his favorite one the moment when he shared the screen with Nicolas Cage. Actually, Andy Samberg recently called it his all-time favorite live moment from the show.
During his most recent appearance on the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, Samberg shared the story when Cage joined him for a “Weekend Update” bit in 2012. The sketch featured Samberg doing funny impressions of Cage when he was sitting right beside him. Even this was a funny moment, Samberg said he was nervous before going into it.
“I didn’t want him to hate me,” Samberg told Conan. “I have so much respect for him. I’ve watched a thousand hours of Nic Cage. That’s why the impression even exists—it’s just in my system.”
Luckily, Cage didn’t merely take the joke well but also appreciated Samberg. Samberg praised him for joining in and making those moments even more fun. “He was the nicest,” Samberg said. “It felt alive and electric. He was just a joy to work with.”
The story doesn’t end there. Samberg also added that the impressions of Cage stuck long after he said goodbyeto SNL. He used that same voice for his character in the animated series Digman!, which first aired in 2023.
While talking to Seth Meyers in 2024, Andy Samberg revealed that the voice “was birthed from my Nic Cage impression.”
The second season of Digman! premiered on July 9.
