A British family who took a leap of faith by quitting their jobs and selling their home to travel the world says the bold decision saved them as a family and gave them a new lease on life.
Chris and Tamira Hutchinson, along with their three daughters—Olivia, 10, Scarlett, 8, and Bella, 4—traded their daily grind in Corby, Northamptonshire, for a life of adventure across the globe. Now, nearly two years into their journey, they are thriving and inspiring others to chase their dreams.
Breaking Free from the Daily Struggle
Despite working long hours—Chris as a personal trainer and Tamira as a swimming teacher—the couple found themselves barely making ends meet. The rising cost of living in the UK left them struggling, and they rarely spent quality time together as a family.
“We were living paycheck to paycheck, constantly exhausted, and barely saw each other,” said Tamira. “It felt like we were working just to survive, not to live.”
During the COVID-19 pandemic, they had time to reflect and realized they didn’t want to return to the same lifestyle. In 2022, they made the daring decision to sell their three-bedroom house and use the money to fund a life of full-time travel.
“It was a huge risk,” Chris admitted. “We thought it might not work out, but we had to try. Now, we have no regrets.”
A Journey Across Continents
Since setting off in May 2023, the family has visited Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, China, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, and Qatar. They have been immersing themselves in new cultures, meeting people from all walks of life, and creating lifelong memories.
Their adventures took an unexpected turn when they became social media sensations, particularly in China. A video of a drone delivering their drinks went viral, racking up eight million views on TikTok. Their audience skyrocketed from a few thousand followers to over a million across various platforms, turning their travel vlog into their main source of income.
“We never set out to become ‘internet famous,’ but it has given us the freedom to keep traveling,” said Chris.
Facing Challenges Along the Way
While their journey has been incredible, it hasn’t been without difficulties. Tamira battled dengue fever in Thailand, their family credit card was swallowed by an ATM in Vietnam, and they all suffered from a sickness bug while staying in a hostel in the Philippines.
“Not every day is a postcard-perfect adventure,” Tamira admitted. “But even the hard moments bring us closer together.”
A New Life, No Looking Back
Currently based in Penang, Malaysia, the family enjoys a slower pace while homeschooling their children and planning future travels. Their next destinations include Dubai, Australia, India, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia.
“We have no plans to return to the UK permanently,” Chris shared. “Our quality of life is so much better now, and our children are learning more than they ever could in a classroom.”
Their story has inspired countless others to rethink what’s possible. They regularly receive messages from families seeking advice on how to break free from the traditional 9-to-5 routine.
“If you love a challenge and want to spend more time with your family, go for it,” Tamira encouraged. “You never know until you try.”
Making Dreams a Reality
What started as a dream has now become their way of life. “We risked it all, but we’ve gained everything,” said Chris. “This adventure has saved us as a family, and we wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
With no plans of slowing down, the Hutchinsons continue to explore, inspire, and prove that sometimes, taking the biggest risks leads to the greatest rewards.
