Taylor Swift has once again found a way to surprise her fans. This time she has put her own twist on George Michael’s legendary track Father Figure.
The pop superstar included an interpolation of the 1987 hit in a brand-new song on her upcoming album The Life of a Showgirl, and George Michael’s estate has now spoken out about it.
Turns out, they couldn’t be happier. In a statement shared on Michael’s official social media pages, the estate said they were “delighted” when Swift and her team reached out earlier this year.
“When we heard the track, we had no hesitation in agreeing to this association between two great artists, and we know George would have felt the same,” the statement read. They also wished Swift “every success” with her album, which drops this Friday.
For longtime fans, Father Figure holds a special place in music history. It was one of the standout hits from Michael’s debut solo album Faith and even topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 1988. Since then, it has been sampled by artists like LL Cool J, Destiny’s Child, and P.M. Dawn, proving just how timeless the track really is.
This is not the first time Swift has connected with George Michael’s music. Back in 2007, she recorded a cover of Wham!’s Last Christmas for her holiday EP. While she does not often use other artists’ work in her songs, when she does, it always turns into something special. Fans are eager to hear how she has blended her style with Michael’s classic sound.
With The Life of a Showgirl releasing soon, all eyes are on Swift, and it looks like George’s legacy is shining right along with her.
