After Rivera’s death was confirmed, her family broke their silence on the matter.

In a news conference on Monday, Ventura County Sheriff Bill Ayub said that Naya Rivera used the last of her strength to save her son before she died. Rivera, 33, was presumed dead after going missing last Wednesday. Her body was discovered Monday morning at Lake Piru.

“She mustered enough energy to get her son back onto the boat, but not enough to save herself,” Ayub said.

The Glee star rented a pontoon boat with her son last Wednesday, but only her 4-year-old son was discovered asleep on the boat. The child told rescuers that he and his mother had gone into the water to swim, but she did not get back on the boat. Rivera’s son said he saw his mom disappear under the surface of the water.

Rivera’s family released a statement after an autopsy was conducted, thanking everyone for the outpouring of love and support over the past week.

“While we grieve the loss of our beautiful legend, we are blessed to honor her everlasting legacy and magnetic spirit,” Riverea’s family said. “Naya was an amazing talent, but was an even greater person, mother, daughter and sister.”

Rivera’s Glee family also came forward with support. The creators of the show announced that a college fund is being created for her son.
