The new film is being headed by the original’s director.

Since its original debut in 2005, Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon has proven to be one of the studio’s most prolific and popular franchises. The original film received multiple sequels, and spawned numerous television and streaming spin-off series and films. Originally based on the books of the same name by Cressida Cowell, the original film follows the adventures of a viking teenager named Hiccup who befriends and tames a dragon he names Toothless, and the two work together to change his community’s perception of dragons and become its protectors.

While it hasn’t been that long since the franchise launched, relatively speaking, Dreamworks has apparently decided to take a page out of Disney’s playbook and take the franchise into the real world. The company announced this week that they are producing a live-action reboot of How to Train your Dragon, scheduled for release some time in 2025. Not much is known about the production at the moment, though there are rumors that the casting process is already underway.

The most interesting part of the production is that it will be written, directed, and produced by Dean DeBlois. DeBlois served as co-writer and co-director of the original film trilogy alongside Will Davies and Chris Sander. This will be DeBlois first live-action production, though he’ll be helped along by producer Marc Platt and the Universal subsidiary Marc Platt Productions.
