The Trump administration has stirred up a storm ahead of this year’s Super Bowl, and it has nothing to do with football.
Corey Lewandowski, a former Trump campaign manager who now advises Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, says ICE agents could show up during the big game, right as Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny takes the stage for the Halftime Show.
“There is nowhere you can provide safe haven to people who are in this country illegally. Not the Super Bowl and nowhere else,” Lewandowski declared on The Benny Show. He also said that the government will crack down “everywhere,” and anyone in the country without papers will be detained and deported.
This statement caused a strong reaction. Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, has often been open about his concerns regarding ICE. The artist is making only one U.S. stop on his Debí Tirar Más Fotos tour, the Super Bowl, because he has long worried about immigration raids at his shows.
In one of his interviews, he admitted, “One of the reasons I didn’t tour in the U.S. was the issue of ICE possibly being outside my concert.”
Bad Bunny is a U.S. citizen because Puerto Rico is part of the United States. However, he still often talks about Trump’s immigration policies. He has posted about ICE raids, shared political messages through his songs, and publicly raised his voice against how immigrants are treated.
Now, ICE has been linked to the Super Bowl. Fans are nervous that the biggest night of sports and music could be overshadowed by politics.
