Disney Releases First Trailer for ‘Lightyear’

To infinity and theaters next year.

While Woody was the primary protagonist of 1995’s Toy Story and its sequels, the breakout character of the series was undoubtedly Buzz Lightyear. Somewhat unsurprisingly, given Buzz’s in-universe popularity as a toy, he proved to be a cash cow for Disney, selling not only merchandise but his own spin-off animated series (which ended way too soon, but that’s neither here nor there). Buzz is still a tentpole of Disney’s stable of popular non-princess characters, and it’s about time he got a movie all to himself.

Today, Disney and Pixar released the first trailer for Lightyear, a new movie detailing the backstory of the Buzz Lightyear character. Presumably, this would be the movie that Toy Story‘s Andy first saw to inspire his desire for the Buzz Lightyear action figure, but as far as anyone can currently tell, Lightyear will be an entirely separate continuity from Toy Story proper.

Details on the film’s story are still limited, with the trailer only providing brief glimpses of Buzz’s voyage into space and time spent on distant worlds, interacting with alien species, all backed by the excellent choice of David Bowie’s “Starman.” Interestingly, rather than Tim Allen, who voiced Buzz in all four Toy Story films, Buzz will be portrayed by Chris Evans, who is apparently pretty psyched about the opportunity.

“The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” Evans said in a statement. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else. Watching them work is nothing short of magic. I pinch myself every day.”

Lightyear is scheduled to release in theaters on June 17, 2022.
