Hollywood apparently has a new passenger in the Days of Thunder sequel — and he is bringing plenty of turbulence.
Randy Quaid, who played team owner Tim Daland in the original 1990 racing movie, has launched an unusually fiery tirade at Tom Cruise after Nicole Kidman was missing from the first announcement for the upcoming sequel.
Cruise is officially returning as fearless NASCAR driver Cole Trickle nearly 40 years after the original film. But instead of simply celebrating the comeback, Quaid seems to have looked at the cast list, noticed Kidman’s name was missing, and decided it was time to hit the brakes — loudly.
Randy Quaid Wants the Original Romance Back
Quaid took to X to make his feelings crystal clear, arguing that Kidman should return as Dr. Claire Lewicki, the neurosurgeon who treated Cole after his devastating racing crash in the original movie.
His message quickly turned from passionate casting opinion into a much more provocative rant, as he directly challenged Cruise over the decision.
Quaid also took aim at Anne Hathaway, who has been announced as Cruise’s new leading co-star. The actor made comments about Hathaway’s pregnancy and later criticized her as a “leftist, woke” choice while claiming the sequel’s audience would be MAGA.
In other words, Quaid did not exactly send a polite casting suggestion. He sent the Hollywood equivalent of a very angry pit-crew radio message.
Cruise and Hathaway Are Already Revving Up
While Quaid was busy objecting to the casting, Cruise and Hathaway were busy promoting their new movie in a considerably more cheerful fashion.
The pair recently appeared together at Daytona International Speedway in Florida, posing beside a green-and-yellow race car reminiscent of the vehicle Cruise drove in the original film.
Cruise and Hathaway then filmed a playful announcement confirming that Days of Thunder 2 is headed for theaters in summer 2028.
Hathaway, who is expecting her third child with husband Adam Shulman, joked that she would have the baby first and then get to work on the movie.
Cruise agreed with the plan before announcing the release window and cheekily telling fans not to be late.
Apparently, the production schedule is already moving faster than the race cars.
Hathaway Is Not Replacing Kidman on Paper
One important detail has been somewhat lost amid the online drama: Hathaway’s involvement does not automatically mean Kidman’s character has been written out.
Paramount has not announced Kidman as part of the current cast, but there has also been no official confirmation that Claire Lewicki has been removed from the story.
Hathaway is expected to play a new character connected to a racing team, with reports describing her role as an owner and engineer.
So, for now, fans may want to keep their speculation engines idling.
The Original Days of Thunder Had a Lot More Than Racing
The casting controversy carries an extra layer of Hollywood history because the original Days of Thunder was where Cruise and Kidman first met.
Their characters, Cole and Claire, developed a romance after Claire helped Cole recover from a frightening racing accident. Off screen, their relationship also quickly became serious.
Cruise and Kidman married in December 1990 and later adopted two children, Isabella and Connor. Their marriage ended in 2001 after more than a decade together.
Kidman has previously spoken about how intensely she fell in love with Cruise while filming the movie, describing the relationship as something that happened very quickly and passionately.
That history makes her absence from the first sequel announcement particularly noticeable to fans who remember the original.
Cruise Is Still Driving Full Speed Ahead
Cruise isn’t exactly known for taking the easy route when it comes to action movies, and Days of Thunder appears to be another opportunity to get behind the wheel.
The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott and featured an impressive cast including Robert Duvall, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, Caroline Williams and John C. Reilly.
Cruise’s dedication to the racing sequences was reportedly intense. Cary Elwes has recalled that Cruise crashed one of the expensive race cars into a wall on his first day of driving.
According to Elwes, Cruise noticed the impending collision and simply said, “Hello, wall.”
Considering Cruise’s later reputation for performing increasingly outrageous stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise, perhaps crashing a race car was merely an early chapter in his long relationship with danger.
Days of Thunder Is Getting the Big-Screen Treatment
The sequel is being produced by Cruise alongside Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper. Will Staples is writing the screenplay, while Jonathan Levine is directing.
The story is being kept under wraps for now, but the movie is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 2, 2028.
It is also being designed for premium theatrical experiences, including IMAX, Dolby Cinema and 4DX.
That means audiences won’t simply be watching racing cars scream around a track. If everything goes according to plan, they’ll practically be invited into the driver’s seat.
A Sequel With Plenty of Questions
The return of Days of Thunder comes after Cruise successfully revived another beloved 1980s property with Top Gun: Maverick.
That film proved that audiences can still turn up in huge numbers for a decades-old franchise when the nostalgia is paired with modern filmmaking and plenty of spectacle.
Now Cruise is hoping to do something similar with Cole Trickle.
The big question is whether Days of Thunder 2 can recreate the magic of the original while introducing a new generation of characters.
And then there is the question fans are already asking: Could Nicole Kidman still appear?
For now, there is no official confirmation that she will.
But Hollywood has taught audiences one thing repeatedly — until the cameras stop rolling, never assume the casting list is completely finished.
As for Randy Quaid, he has certainly made his preference clear.
He wants Kidman back, and judging by his reaction, he would apparently like the casting meeting to happen somewhere near a racetrack, preferably with the volume turned all the way up.
Whether Cruise changes course remains to be seen. One thing is already certain, though: Days of Thunder 2 has managed to generate plenty of drama before a single new lap has been filmed.
