Brad Pitt is getting candid about a deeply personal part of his life, and his latest comments offer a refreshingly honest reminder that sobriety is not always a straight line.

The Oscar-nominated actor recently acknowledged that after maintaining sobriety from alcohol for seven years, he eventually “got back off the wagon.” Rather than presenting his journey as a simple success story, Pitt has spoken openly about the setbacks, turning points and support systems that have shaped his relationship with drinking and substance use over the years.

In a recent Esquire interview published August 10, 2026, Pitt explained that he now approaches alcohol with considerably more restraint.

“I can have a few. But I can’t have a lot,” he said, emphasizing that he has learned where his limits are.

His admission has brought renewed attention to a sobriety journey that stretches back decades. From giving up marijuana to stepping away from alcohol, attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and leaning on sober friends, Pitt has repeatedly described having to reassess his choices.

2009: Was the Year Pitt Put Parenting First

Long before his struggles with alcohol became a major part of his public story, Pitt had already decided to leave marijuana behind.

During a 2009 appearance on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the actor explained that becoming a father changed his perspective.

“I’m a dad now,” Pitt said, explaining that marijuana had previously left him less alert.

The decision reflected an early pattern in Pitt’s story: when he felt a habit was interfering with the kind of person or parent he wanted to be, he eventually chose to step away from it.

2012: Pitt Admitted He Had Been Smoking Too Much

A few years later, Pitt looked back even more critically at his marijuana use.

While discussing his rise to fame in the late 1990s, he admitted that he had used marijuana as a way to hide from the overwhelming attention that came with becoming a major Hollywood star.

“I got really sick of myself,” he recalled.

Pitt described spending too much time sitting around and smoking, eventually realizing that he wanted to re-engage with life rather than retreat from it.

That realization became an important turning point. He said he wanted to create meaningful work, participate in stories that mattered to him and make better use of the opportunities he had been given.

2017: Pitt Revealed He Had Quit Drinking

Pitt’s relationship with alcohol became much more serious following his 2016 split from Angelina Jolie.

In a 2017 interview with GQ, he openly acknowledged that he had been drinking too much and said he had stopped drinking completely. At the time, he had been sober for about six months.

The actor also acknowledged that alcohol had been readily available through his connection to Château Miraval, the French winery he and Jolie owned.

Pitt described himself as someone who had been able to drink heavily and said he eventually realized he needed to step away.

During those early months of sobriety, he joked that cranberry juice and carbonated water had become his drink of choice.

Behind the humor, however, was a serious realization: Pitt had recognized that his drinking had gone beyond something he could comfortably manage.

2019: He Opened Up About Alcoholics Anonymous

Pitt later revealed that he had spent 18 months attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The actor described the experience as unusually honest and supportive, saying that sitting in a room with other men who were willing to be vulnerable created a space where people could speak openly without feeling heavily judged.

That community became an important part of his recovery.

Pitt also credited fellow actor Bradley Cooper with helping him stay on the path. Cooper, who has spoken publicly about his own long-term sobriety, was a source of encouragement for Pitt.

At the 2020 National Board of Review Awards Gala, Pitt thanked Cooper publicly, saying that he had gotten sober because of him and that his life had become happier as a result.

2025: Pitt Reflected on Reaching Rock Bottom

Pitt offered another candid look at his recovery during a 2025 appearance on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast.

Speaking to Shepard, who has also discussed his own sobriety journey, Pitt described the period when he first turned seriously toward recovery.

He said he was essentially “on his knees” when he began attending AA meetings and was willing to try whatever might help him change direction.

Pitt also described the experience as a personal reboot.

For the actor, getting sober wasn’t simply about removing alcohol from his life. It meant confronting parts of himself he believed needed to change and becoming more awake and engaged with his life.

2026: Pitt Admits He Fell Off the Wagon

Now, Pitt is revealing that even seven years of sobriety did not mean his journey would remain perfectly linear.

During his 2026 Esquire interview, the actor revealed that he had returned to drinking after years without alcohol.

His comments came after he offered a reporter wine during the conversation, prompting a discussion about his current relationship with drinking.

Pitt said he now drinks in a much more controlled way, but he has learned that moderation has very real limits for him.

“I got overconfident a couple times,” he explained, adding that he realized drinking more than a small amount was “not good for me.”

That distinction appears to be central to Pitt’s current outlook. He isn’t portraying his experience as a return to his old habits. Instead, he is acknowledging that he has had setbacks and has had to learn from them.

Pitt’s Story Shows Why Sobriety Isn’t Always Linear

What makes Pitt’s latest admission particularly striking is how different it is from the neat recovery narratives we often hear about celebrities.

His journey has included quitting marijuana, giving up alcohol, finding support through AA, relying on sober friends and, eventually, acknowledging that he had started drinking again.

There have been breakthroughs and difficult moments along the way.

But Pitt’s recent comments suggest that he doesn’t see one setback as erasing everything that came before it. Instead, his story has become one of continually recognizing what works, understanding his limits and making adjustments when something stops working.

After years of publicly discussing his struggles, the actor seems more comfortable acknowledging the complicated reality behind them.

And perhaps that’s the biggest takeaway from Pitt’s journey: progress doesn’t necessarily look perfect. Sometimes it means making a change, maintaining it for years, realizing you’ve slipped, and then being honest enough to reassess where you stand.

For Pitt, that reassessment is happening in the public eye. But the underlying lesson is much broader: a person’s relationship with sobriety, alcohol or recovery can be complicated, deeply personal and constantly evolving.
