After season 1 finished in March 2023, fans of The Last of Us had to wait for more than two years. Now, HBO’s content head Casey Bloys has disclosed that the wait for season 3 might be just as long or perhaps even longer.
Casey Bloys recently told Variety, “”The series is definitely planned for 2027.” When asked if the season could be part of the 2026–2027 content calendar, he affirmed they’re aiming for that. Co-creator-cum-showrunner Craig Mazin “is still working it out whether it will be two more seasons or one more long season. It hasn’t been decided yet, and I’m following Craig’s lead on that,” Bloys said.
Season 2 is scheduled to premiere in 2025. After that, waiting for two more years might feel just like forever for die-hard fans. The primary cause of delay is the scale of production and difficulty to adapt the upcoming part of the video game. Craig Mazin is still trying his best to finalize the plan. There’s also talk that the story could be presented in two more parts instead of one full season.
Casey Bloys said, “Obviously it was great to have Neil involved in the beginning.” He also commented that “a lot of people don’t realize that Neil has a full-time job creating video games and running Naughty Dog. It’s a really big job that he’s got… But I believe he’s given us a good blueprint with the show. And obviously Craig is a pro, so I think we’ll be in excellent shape.”
The one who played part II of The Last of Us already knows that the story’s next part will be emotional and highly controversial. If HBO follows the game’s plot, viewers should expect intense storytelling and big shifts in characters, as well as a few surprises that might shock them.
Although waiting for two more years feels like forever, HBO seems committed to taking time and doing perfect things. With two successful seasons under its belt and die-hard fans still hooked, HBO intends to continue the same legacy.
So, while the wait is long, it just might be worth it.
