See you, Space Cowboy.

Last month’s Netflix premier of the live-action adaptation of beloved anime series Cowboy Bebop was met with some… mixed responses, to put it charitably. Longtime fans of the series were either disappointed or outright upset with the changes in plot and characterization, while critics found the series to be generally bland and uninteresting. This culminated in Rotten Tomatoes scores of around 50% for both critics and audiences, not exactly a glowing reception.

It seems that the reception was too negative for Netflix’s tastes, as today it was announced that after only one season, and only a month after release at that, the live action Cowboy Bebop has been cancelled.

“I truly loved working on this,” tweeted the show’s co-executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach. “It came from a real and pure place of respect and affection.”

“I wish we could make what we planned for a second season, but you know what they say, men plan, god laughs. See you Space Cowboy.”

Unfortunately, the cancellation of the show means that the final scene of the first season, in which Spike Spiegel is introduced to Radical Edward, a main character from the anime who was missing for most of the series, will not be elaborated upon. Not long after the show first released, a clip of Ed’s introduction was circulated on Twitter, with many claiming that the character’s extremely exaggerated portrayal turned them away from the show entirely. This is especially unfortunate as this was one of the first roles of rookie actor Eden Perkins, though those who were upset with the portrayal of Ed have clarified that they were more upset with the direction of the character than Perkins themselves.
