Elden Ring and God of War Ragnarok are the top contenders for Game of the Year.
As 2022 comes to a close and December approaches, another yearly award show approaches. In this case, it’s the 2022 Game Awards, the award show recognizing excellency in the video game industry, from major releases to ongoing success stories, as well as performers, eSports athletes, and content creators.
This week, the nominations for the awards were revealed, with public voting officially open on the event’s website. For the coveted Game of the Year award, the two biggest competitors are FromSoftware’s milestone release and worldwide smash hit, Elden Ring, and the recently-released follow-up to 2018’s God of War, God of War Ragnarok. A Plague Tale: Requiem, Horizon: Forbidden West, Stray, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 are also present in the runnings.
Of particular note is a new award category, Best Adaptation. According to the official website, this category is for “recognizing outstanding creative work that faithfully and authentically adapts a video game to another entertainment medium.” The nominees for this award include Arcane: League of Legends, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, The Cuphead Show, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and Uncharted.

Voting is open now for these and 29 other categories. Receipients of the awards are decided primarily by an internal committee, though the total votes in each category do weigh into the decision. The Game Awards will be livestreaming on most major platforms like YouTube and Twitch on December 8, 2022.
