Pandemic or not, there’s always time for coffee.

It’s oddly reassuring to know that despite everything that’s been going on recently (and there’s a lot), there are still some societal constants we can rely on. Birds fly, grass grows, sun shines, and Starbucks releases new promotional cups for the holiday season.

In an announcement posted on their website, Starbucks unveiled the designs for their new line of holiday-themed coffee cups for 2020. As one would expect, the cups feature designs reminiscent of holidays and gift-giving, featuring patterns like wrapping paper, ribbons, and those little sparkly star patterns you see a lot in vintage commercials. These designs will all start appearing in Starbucks locations starting today, November 6.

“This year’s holiday design brings forward all the joyful elements of the holiday season in ribbons of Starbucks greens and a jolly red like a cozy holiday sweater,” the announcement touted.

In addition to the regular holiday cups, Starbucks is offering its special reusable red cup, also in a holiday theme, in a free giveaway. Anyone who orders a handcrafted holiday drink today will receive their order in a red cup to keep and use as they please while supplies last. You can get a cup from ordering in the store, going through the drive-thru, doing curbside pickup, and through Starbucks Delivers. To clarify, a “holiday drink” is any item from the seasonal winter menu, including the Peppermint Mocha, Toasted White Chocolate Mocha, Caramel Brulee Latte, Chestnut Praline Latte and Eggnog Latte, and more. Pretty much anything with peppermint or white chocolate, really.

The official theme for this holiday event is “Carry the Merry.”

“Our thought behind the cups this year was about people carrying them out in the world as messengers of joy,” said Jeff Wilkson, creative director for Starbucks. “In a way that message deepened as we got further and further into this year. We want to be that beacon for people, a brief moment that they can look forward to.”
