Deadpool to Join MCU in Third Film

The Merc with a Mouth is finally coming home.

For a long time, all X-Men films, including X-Men-adjacent properties like the ever-popular Deadpool, took place in their own self-contained continuity, separate from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was because, unlike almost every other Marvel super hero property, the X-Men were owned by Fox, not Disney. Of course, ever since Disney bought Fox out, Marvel movie fans have all been asking the same question: when is Deadpool joining the MCU? Turns out, pretty soon.

In an interview with Collider about Disney+’s WandaVision, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige got on the topic of the next Deadpool film, and in the process, spilled the beans that the movie will be a part of the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. If you’re worried about the sociopathic anti-hero losing some of his bite in the transition to the Disney-owned universe, don’t be; Feige confirmed that Deadpool 3 will be maintaining the series’ usual R-rating.

“It will be rated R and we are working on a script right now, and Ryan’s overseeing a script right now… It will not be [filming] this year,” Feige explained, referring to Deadpool‘s star, Ryan Reynolds. “Ryan is a very busy, very successful actor. We’ve got a number of things we’ve already announced that we now have to make, but it’s exciting for it to have begun. Again, a very different type of character in the MCU, and Ryan is a force of nature, which is just awesome to see him bring that character to life.”

Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux, two writers from Fox’s own Bob’s Burgers, are currently heading up the writing process while Reynolds advises. Due to a variety of factors, including the COVID-19 pandemic and Reynolds’ own schedule, filming isn’t projected to begin until at least 2022, which means we probably won’t be seeing Deadpool meeting Spiderman until 2023 at the earliest. When it does happen, though, you can bet it’s gonna be hilarious.
