So many musicals, so much time!

Disney has confirmed that its studio is developing an adaptation of the musical Once on This Island for its streaming platform Disney+. The musical first debuted on the Great White Way in 1990 and was revived on Broadway in 2013 at the Circle in the Square Theatre.

The musical, set in the Caribbean’s French Antilles, tells the story of a peasant girl named Ti Moune who falls in love with an aristocrat. Their romance prompts the island’s gods to wager whether love or death is stronger.

Playwright Jocelyn Bioh (Russian Doll) has signed on for the film adaptation along with producer Marc Platt (La La Land) and director Wanuri Kahiu (the Kenyan filmmaker behind Rafiki). Unlike Hamilton, which was a filmed stage performance, Once on This Island will be a traditional live-action film adaptation. No news of cast has been reported as of yet.

Despite only running for one year, the one-act musical quickly developed an enthusiastic following. Once On This Island went on to win the Tony Award for Best Revival and received much critical acclaim.
