Rock icon Jack White has officially joined the mobile world, thanks to a birthday gift! On July 9, the frontman of the White Stripes celebrated his 50th birthday by unwrapping his very first cell phone. Guess who made it happen? His better half, Olivia Jean, gave him a cell phone as a birthday gift.
“Well y’all it’s either all over for me now or just the beginning,” Jack White wrote in his Instagram post. “I am now the reluctant owner of a cellular telephone for the first time in my life! A lovely 50th birthday present courtesy of my gorgeous and thoughtful wife Mrs. Olivia Jean (who took these photos as well.)”
The legendary musician said that it wasn’t easy to live without a mobile phone for all these years. He wrote, “I’ve been saying that my days were numbered for years.”
He added, “Can’t listen to my music in my car, can’t park at a parking lot by myself because of QR codes, etc. etc. and I guess Olivia decided to be kind and put me (and all my loved ones) out of my misery! I thought if I could make it to 50 years old at least without ever having one that I could be proud of myself, and I am.”

White remarked, “Can’t wait to talk to you all soon. My phone number is the square root of all of our combined social interaction times Pi.”
The couple celebrated the birthday of Jack White by going to a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park. His mom, Teresa Gillis, was also with him at the Detroit Tigers game. When they were there, his friend, actor and singer John C. Reilly, came onto the field and made his day by singing “Happy Birthday” for him.
The Detroit Tigers shared a video in which White looks surprised as well as a little shy during the unexpected performance of his birthday celebration.
“You might see Jack as a rock star, but he definitely focuses on family. I think that’s really cool,” Reilly said to Tigers commentators. “Something we both share, I think.”
Jack White will be honored in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame this November as part of the band The White Stripes.
