Disney’s latest live-action remake, Snow White, may not have cast a spell on the box office, but it still managed to take the top spot in its debut weekend.
With a $43 million domestic opening, the highly anticipated film had a softer-than-expected start, but its $87.3 million global haul across 52 territories gives it a fighting chance to pick up momentum in the coming weeks. Given its $250 million budget, the film has a long road ahead, but Disney’s past live-action remakes have proven that a slow start doesn’t always spell doom. The Little Mermaid (2023), for example, opened to $95 million but went on to gross nearly $570 million worldwide.
Despite its underwhelming start, Snow White still achieved a major milestone—it dethroned China’s animated blockbuster Ne Zha 2, which had dominated the global box office for eight consecutive weeks. The mythic epic added $15 million this weekend, pushing its staggering global total past $2.1 billion.
Weekend Box Office Recap
Trailing Snow White in the domestic rankings was Steven Soderbergh’s spy thriller Black Bag, which added $4.4 million in its second weekend, bringing its total to $14.8 million. Captain America: Brave New World held steady in third place with $4.1 million, pushing its domestic total to $192 million and crossing $400 million globally.
Meanwhile, Bong Joon Ho’s Mickey 17 and the Jack Quaid-led action comedy Novocaine rounded out the top five, earning $3.9 million and $3.7 million, respectively.
The biggest disappointment of the weekend was Robert De Niro’s crime drama Alto Knights, which struggled with a $3.1 million debut despite its impressive cast and a $45 million budget. The Jonathan Majors-led bodybuilding biopic Magazine Dreams fared even worse, opening to a mere $700,000, a result largely overshadowed by Majors’ legal troubles.
What’s Next at the Box Office?
Next weekend promises a mix of genres to entice moviegoers, from the quirky fantasy comedy Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, to the psychological horror The Woman in the Yard from Jaume Collet-Serra, as well as the heartfelt literary adaptation The Friend, featuring Naomi Watts.
While Snow White didn’t quite live up to its royal expectations, its journey is far from over. With international markets still in play and plenty of time to build momentum, the fairest one of all may still have a box office happily ever after.
