Sofía Vergara is keeping the possibility of a Modern Family sequel alive, but with a humorous twist: she’s making sure her co-star Ed O’Neill stays healthy enough to join her if it ever happens.
In a recent interview with Variety, Vergara, who starred as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on the beloved sitcom, joked about her desire for a reunion, saying, “I always joke with him, ‘Ed, don’t die. Because if we do the sequel, it will take some time, and you’re the oldest of us. You can’t be dead!'”
Vergara and O’Neill, who played the quirky and endearing Jay Pritchett, spent 12 memorable years on the show. Despite not winning an Emmy for her role, Vergara became a household name thanks to Modern Family, which concluded its run in 2020 after 11 seasons and a special finale.
Reflecting on the prospect of revisiting her role, Vergara expressed her enthusiasm: “I’d die to be on that set. It’d be so much fun. A TV movie maybe?” Her playful comments underscore her deep affection for the show and her onscreen family.
Off-screen, the camaraderie between Vergara and O’Neill extends beyond their characters’ playful bickering. Vergara recently teased O’Neill about his age after seeing him in the FX miniseries Clipped. “You look f—ing old,” she quipped, showcasing their enduring friendship.
Currently, Vergara is busy promoting her latest project, Griselda, a Netflix miniseries in which she stars as the infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. Vergara, who co-produced the series, has received an Emmy nomination for her performance—a milestone as the first Modern Family cast member to achieve this honor since the show’s end.
The role of Griselda Blanco is a significant departure from the comedic Gloria Pritchett, with Vergara navigating the complexities of portraying a ruthless criminal. “Back then, my lines were easy… It wasn’t like monologues,” Vergara said. Portraying a figure with such a dark history, she had to carefully balance the portrayal, avoiding romanticizing Blanco’s violent actions.
Vergara will face tough competition for the Emmy, going up against prestigious actresses like Jodie Foster, Brie Larson, Juno Temple, and Naomi Watts.
As Vergara continues to shine in new roles, her playful comments about a Modern Family sequel remind fans of the beloved show’s lasting impact and her enduring connection to her iconic role.
