This is the only specimen that will be available for private ownership.
Generally speaking, archeological discoveries aren’t kept by private individuals. The majority of them are given to educational institutions like universities and museums for study and preservation. This month, however, there will be a rare exception to that norm in the form of a genuine dinosaur skeleton.
New York-based auction house Sotheby’s announced today that a complete dinosaur skeleton will be one of the items up for sale during their natural history auction scheduled for later this month. The dinosaur in question is a Gorgosaurus, a late Cretaceous Period predator believed to have predated the infamous Tyrannosaurus rex by a good 10 million years. There are many samples of Gorgosaurus skeleton in educational institutions around the world, but this one, originally uncovered in 2018 in Montanna, will be the lone specimen set for private ownership.
“In my career, I have had the privilege of handling and selling many exceptional and unique objects, but few have the capacity to inspire wonder and capture imaginations quite like this unbelievable Gorgosaurus skeleton,” Cassandra Hatton, Sotheby’s global head of science and popular culture, said in a statement.
The Gorgosaurus skeleton will highlight Sotheby’s natural history auction on July 28, the auction house said. https://t.co/7aLdfz53RG

Sotheby’s has ballparked the USD value of the specimen between $5 million and $8 million. So if you’re obscenely wealthy and want to own an actual dinosaur (or maybe donate it to a museum or something), make some room in your schedule for a shopping trip this month.
