The animated film is slated for release next April.

After multiple years in clandestine development, with only the occasional drip feed of factoid to fans, Nintendo and Illumination have finally released the first proper trailer for the animated Super Mario Bros. film. This first trailer gives us a taste of Chris Pratt and Jack Black in their roles as Mario and Bowser, respectively, backed by Illumination’s impressive animation skills.

Initial response to the trailer has been mostly positive, with many fans praising Black’s gleefully sinister performance as Bowser. However, reception to Pratt as Mario has been a bit cooler, with users across various social platforms noting that he sounds less like Mario, and more like “Chris Pratt voicing Mario.”

“You can tell Jack Black put a ton of love and heart into his Bowser voice, while Chris Pratt just uh… spoke?” writes one Twitter user.

“who would have thought that chris pratt’s big secret voice in the mario movie would be his normal speaking voice,” writes another Twitter user.

Back in June, Pratt spoke to Variety about his performance in the film, hyping it up as a Mario performance we’ve never seen before. “It’s an animated voiceover narrative,” he said. “It’s not a live-action movie. I’m not gonna be wearing a plumber suit running all over. I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before.”

The trailer also featured brief glimpses of Charlie Day as Luigi and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, while the other members of the cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike remain unheard. Nintendo and Illumination are planning to release more trailers as the film’s release in April approaches.
