Edgar Ramirez Casted for Role in ‘Borderlands’ Movie

He’ll be a powerful, charismatic businessman.

I have been disappointed by more than few movie adaptations of video game franchises (Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog being the lone exceptions), so I can’t help but be a little skeptical of the idea of a Borderlands movie. Speaking as someone who has played every game in the series, Borderlands doesn’t exactly have what I would call a “flowing plot,” so making a two-hour movie out of it seems like a silly idea. But hey, they got some good cast selections together, so who knows, maybe I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Eli Roth, who is directing the Borderlands movie adaptation, announced today that Legendary Pictures has secured Edgar Ramirez for the role of Atlas in their film, a businessman, arms manufacturer, and someone who is generally considered the most powerful person in the civilized universe. This is a little confusing, as there is no character named “Atlas” in the games, but there is an Atlas Corporation that served as an antagonistic force in the first game, so presumably, he’s related to them somehow.

“What an incredible honor to have an actor of Edgar’s caliber, talent, and charisma playing opposite Cate Blanchett and this remarkable cast,” Roth said. “Atlas has to be a truly magnetic personality, someone with charisma and charm but that air of menace underneath it all. I’ve been a fan of Edgar’s since his early performances and he continues to amaze me with each dramatic turn. We want to create something wild, fun, and very different from anything they’ve seen from Edgar before. I am so, so excited to work with him.”

In addition to Ramirez, the rest of the cast has already been nailed down. We’ve got Cate Blanchett as the mysterious Siren, Lilith, Kevin Hart as the mercenary Roland, Jamie Lee Curtis as unhinged scientist Tannis, Ariana Greenblatt as the temperamental Tiny Tina, Florian Munteanu as the slightly-civilized psycho Krieg, and Jack Black as the infamously annoying robot Claptrap. GearBox CEO Randy Pitchford has also clarified that this movie will take place in a separate continuity from the games, so hopefully they can remedy my aforementioned plot concerns.
