Kristen Stewart is finally talking about one of the boldest moments of her career. Back in 2017, during her first time hosting Saturday Night Live, she came out publicly. In a recent interview on ABC News Live Prime With Linsey Davis, Kristen explained why that moment was so important to her.

For her, it wasn’t about creating headlines or sharing every detail of her personal life. It was about being real. Kristen wanted to live openly and honestly, without hiding who she is. Over the years, she had conversations with people she trusted. Some even warned her that her career might take a hit if she was seen in public with her girlfriend.

Her reaction was simple. She could not live a half-life just to make others comfortable.

“I couldn’t live a half-life just to please others,” Kristen said. “I don’t want to support a system that makes people hide. That is not for me.”

When she hosted SNL on February 4, 2017, Kristen made it clear. She joked about old tweets from Donald Trump criticizing her past relationship with Robert Pattinson. Then she casually added, “I’m hosting SNL and I’m like, so gay, dude.” The line was funny, honest, and powerful. It became one of the most memorable monologues in the show’s history.

Kristen also said that most people already knew who she was dating. That is why she did not feel the need to make a formal announcement before. She also did not want her personal life to be turned into gossip or headlines. But staying quiet was not an option. She wanted to live openly and hoped her honesty might encourage others to do the same.

“I didn’t want to hide from the world we live in,” she explained. “I want to make it more open and accepting. I was already holding my girlfriend’s hand in public. Saying it out loud felt right.”

Since then, Kristen has continued to live her truth. She started dating screenwriter and producer Dylan Meyer in 2019. They officially became husband and wife in April 2025. Their relationship has been full of love, support, and joy.

Kristen’s full interview on ABC News Live Prime With Linsey Davis airs tonight at 7 p.m. ET. Fans can watch it to hear more about her journey, her choices, and the courage it takes to live openly in the spotlight.
