I wonder who they’ll get to play Floop…

2001’s Spy Kids was one of those movies that seemed incomprehensible unless you were in its strike zone. I can’t even begin to imagine what my parents thought of such a strange picture, but as a kid, it was one of my favorites. I watched a VHS copy over and over until it wore out. It was imaginative, funny, and had Danny Trejo. But the million dollar question is this: could such a movie ever truly work twice? Well, I guess we’re gonna find out.

Robert Rodriguez, the director of the original film, has announced that he already has plans in the works to reboot the Spy Kids franchise with the help of Skydance Media and Spyglass Media Group, with Rodriguez himself once again in the writer and director chairs. While he didn’t precisely say as much, some entertainment pundits have theorized that Rodriguez is feeling emboldened to revisit his old stuff after the relative success of We Can Be Heroes on Netflix, the sort-of sequel to the even more bizarre Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl.

Of course, since Daryl Sabara and Alexa PenaVega are most definitely not children anymore, it stands to reason that they’d have to get a new cast together for the spy family to replace the Cortezes. Rodriguez hasn’t leaked any potential candidates, but he did say that he was shooting for a “multicultural family.”

In the meantime, Rodriguez has primarily had his hands in the works of Star Wars, doing some writing for The Mandalorian and the upcoming Book of Boba Fett. If this reboot pans out, maybe he can branch out more into projects he’d like to work on, such as a potential sequel to Alita: Battle Angel.
