Modern Family gave fans laughs for more than ten years. But some of the funniest moments never made it to TV. According to Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet, one of those moments still makes them laugh out loud.
The two actors recently caught up on Ferguson’s podcast Dinner’s on Me. As expected, the conversation quickly turned into a trip down memory lane. They talked about life on set, long shooting days, and the close bond the cast shared. Then one story came up that clearly stood above the rest.
It all happened on a regular workday. Nothing special was planned. The cast was hanging out near the craft service area, grabbing food and chatting. Stonestreet was in the makeup trailer, getting ready as Fizbo, Cameron’s famous clown character.
Back then, the show was a massive hit. Because of that, the set had a fancy glass space built in the middle of the stage for snacks and coffee. It looked cool. The problem was that it was made entirely of clear glass.
That is where things went wrong.
The show’s casting director, Jeff Greenberg, walked confidently toward the group. He did not notice the glass wall at all. Everyone else did. They saw what was about to happen. And yet, no one said a word.
Seconds later, Greenberg walked straight into the glass.
Ferguson said the moment was so shocking that they froze before bursting into laughter. Stonestreet admitted they could see it coming from far away but still did nothing to stop it. That part still makes them laugh today.
To make the moment even more unforgettable, Greenberg’s face print stayed on the glass. Instead of cleaning it right away, the cast outlined it with blue tape. The face mark stayed there for months and became a running joke on set.
Looking back, both actors agreed that the moment perfectly summed up the fun energy behind the scenes. Everyone worked hard, but they also laughed a lot. That comfort and friendship showed on screen.
Modern Family went on to become one of the most loved sitcoms of its time. It won 22 Emmy Awards and helped turn its cast into household names. But for Ferguson and Stonestreet, it is moments like these that matter most.
Years later, the show is still being streamed around the world. And the cast is still laughing about a glass wall that no one warned anyone about.
Some jokes never get old.
