Have you fallen in love yet?
Studio Ghibli’s theatrical anime, Whisper of the Heart (Mimi wo Sumaseba) has an ending that is simultaneously romantic and unrealistic. At the movie’s final scene, main character Shizuku and the man she loves, Seiji, watch the sunrise together. In a romance that developed throughout the storyline of the film, Seiji says he wants to marry Shizuku, and she accepts. But both characters are only 14 years old, so their happily ever after is essentially hypothetical. So, to clear the air and give fans the closure they need, a sequel for Whisper of the Heart has been announced, and it promises to tell the story of Shizuku and Seiji as adults. And this time around, it won’t be animated.
Set to take place 10 years after the events of the movie, Shizuku has given up on her dream of becoming an author and is instead an editor for a children’s literature publisher. Meanwhile, Seiji is living overseas pursuing his ambition of becoming a professional violin maker. In the anime, his dream was already set to take him away from Japan by the end of the story. As a result of their physical and emotional distance, their relationship begins to crumble. But with love still in her heart, Shizuku sets out to reignite their love for each other.
Actress Nana Seino will star as Shizuku, while Seiji will be played by actor Tori Matsuzaka. The movie is set to be released in theaters on Sept. 18, but no announcement on an international release has been made yet.
