The obscure character will be the next Marvel headliner.

Following on the release of Morbius, Sony has announced the next Spider-Man villain that will be receiving their own movie: El Muerto. If you’re not sure who El Muerto is, that’s understandable, as the character only ever appeared in a couple of issues of the Spider-Man comic series. Regardless, Sony’s giving him a movie, and they’ve got Bad Bunny on deck to play him.

Announced during the recent CinemaCon, Sony is targeting El Muerto for release on January 12, 2024. An official synopsis of the film has not been released, but presumably, it will follow the same origin that the character originally had. El Muerto is a Mexican luchadore with superhuman abilities passed down through his family. Every wrestler in the family must defeat their nemesis, the luchadore El Dorado, in a match.

Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, better known as Bad Bunny, has been tapped for the starring role, with Sony hyping him up as “the first-ever Latino actor to headline a live-action Marvel movie.”

“This opportunity to bring El Muerto to life [is] amazing, it’s incredible,” Bad Bunny said at CinemaCon in a quote obtained by Deadline. “I love wrestling. I grew up watching wrestling and I’m a wrestler. I’m a former champion so this is why I love this character. I think it’s the perfect role [for] me and it will be epic.”
