How Do You Live will release in Japanese theaters next year.

Back in 2013, world-famous animated film director and face of Studio Ghibli, Hayao Miyazaki, retired from his position, content to pass the reins onto the other members of the studio. However, in 2016, he announced that he’d be coming out of retirement for one last film titled How Do You Live, though he would be tackling this film at a deliberately slow pace. Six years later, that gradual work has come to fruition.

Studio Ghibli announced today that How Do You Live (currently a tentative title) will be releasing in Japanese theaters on July 14, 2023. The precise details of the film aren’t known, though the announcement does feature an illustration of a bird-like creature. When work on the film started, Miyazaki said that it was inspired by, though not a direct adaptation of, the 1937 children’s novel of the same name by Yoshino Genzaburo. The book follows a young man named Junichi Honda, nicknamed Koperu, as he undertakes a spiritual personal journey and learns what it means to be human. Compared to that story, though, Miyazaki has said that his film will be much more large-scale and fantastical.

This will likely be the last movie that Miyazaki works on, as he deliberately wanted to dedicate this film to his grandson while he still could.
