Starbucks Gets Spooky with Black ‘Phantom Frappuccino’

Charcoal in food and drinks is perfect for October.

While the “unicorn” phase may be out the door, Starbucks is going dark, first debuting their Midnight Mint Mocha Frappuccino (a layered beverage with scoops of extra-dark cocoa blended with coffee, milk and ice, infused with cooling mint sugar crystals and topped with whipped cream) in Europe, and following that, the introduction of the “Phantom Frappuccino” for Halloween.

The beverage – which is actually vegan, so there’s a lot to celebrate just right there – is flavored with coconut, mango, spirulina, charcoal and pineapple, and includes “ghoulish lime slime.”  Customers have the option of dark coconut whipped cream made from coconut milk and black charcoal powder to top it off.

From the picture, the drink looks both creepy and mesmerizing at the same time. The drink is completely black from top to bottom, with a little green “slime” woven throughout it. The lime slime is actually made from spirulina extract, charcoal powder, and lime and lemon juice.

Sadly, this drink will only be available in Europe and for a limited time. The new Starbucks Phantom Frappuccino will only be available for five days, starting Oct. 26.
