The reaction to Baker’s announcement has been decisively negative.

Troy Baker is one of the biggest names in voice acting, with a career spanning numerous animated shows, films, and video games. He has become quite the prominent voice actor thanks to his leading roles in triple-A video game productions like Uncharted and The Last of Us. Today, though, he made an announcement that even fans of those games weren’t exactly stoked on.

In a tweet this morning, Baker announced a new partnership with Voiceverse NFT, an NFT startup that intends to turn the voices of prominent VAs like Baker into semi-tangible items. Apparently, they are also developing AI technology that would allow one to simulate any NFT voice and use it in any voice acting capacity.

“I’m partnering with @VoiceverseNFT to explore ways where together we might bring new tools to new creators to make new things, and allow everyone a chance to own & invest in the IP’s they create. We all have a story to tell,” Baker said in his announcement tweet. “You can hate. Or you can create. What’ll it be?”

Respondents to the tweet called Baker out for indulging in NFTs, which are already a highly questionable business sector with a worrying environmental impact, as well as aiding a company that seeks to create a technology that would render his own job obsolete.

After several hours of intense blowback, Baker posted a series of tweets attempting to diffuse the situation.

“I always want to be a part of the conversation, even if sometimes that finds me in the midst of a loud one. Appreciate y’all sharing your thoughts and giving me a lot to think about. I’m just a storyteller out here trying to tell my story to whomever will hear and hoping I can help others do the same. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’m grateful there are those who are passionate about their stance & not only feel safe to express that but also have the means to do so.

“The “hate/create” part might have been a bit antagonistic. Hope y’all will forgive me for that. Bad attempt to bring levity. Anyway, feel free to resume the conversation, or not as you please. I appreciate those with truth showing it, those with support offering it, and those with anger doing their best to express with it.”
