Disney’s dipping further into their back catalog for remake ideas.

Everyone remembers classics like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella, but does anyone remember the true gem that is The Black Cauldron? Released in 1985, The Black Cauldron is the 25th animated fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and is loosely based on the first two books of The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander.

Drawing inspiration from Welsh mythology, The Black Cauldron was set in the Early Middle Ages and follows the story of a young pig keeper named Taran. He teams up with a young princess named Eilonwy, the bard Fflewddur Fflam, and a wild creature named Gurgi to oppose the evil Horned King from securing the ancient magical cauldron and conquering the world.


The Black Cauldron was the first Disney animated film to receive a PG rating. However, at the time, it proved to be a commercial failure, and Disney did not release the film on home video until 1998, 13 years after its theatrical release.

While the movie may not have done so great back in its day, the film has gone on to be loved by many and is now often considered one of Disney’s more underrated treasures.

With so many still in love with the animation, Disney has reportedly decided to revisit the land of Prydain to produce a live-action version of The Black Cauldron. Little information has been revealed as of right now, but the film will join the likes of Atlantis: The Lost Empire, Hercules and The Snow Queen, all of which are reportedly getting the live-action treatment as well.

The original animation starring the voices of Grant Bardsley, Susan Sheridan, Freddie Jones, Nigel Hawthorne, John Byner, and John Hurt is currently streaming on Disney+.
