That’s a whole lotta pooch.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is one of the most iconic faces (or muzzles, I guess) of children’s media. Since the character’s inception in the 1920s, he’s become a mainstay of children’s books and television. I don’t think anyone has ever been especially curious about the origin of Clifford; he’s just a big red dog, and everyone’s just kind of okay with that. Apparently, though, someone thought there was a story to tell, so what the heck, let’s do an origin story and make it live-action while we’re at it.

Paramount released the first trailer for their upcoming live-action Clifford movie, starring Darby Camp as Emily Elizabeth Howard, a timid young middle schooler who finds the titular dog in a tent of magical oddities. The man running the tent, played by John Cleese, tells her that Clifford will grow in proportion to how much she loves him, and she loves him a lot, prompting him to reach gargantuan size and become a massive headache to Emily’s Uncle Casey, played by Jack Whitehall.

The trailer doesn’t divulge much in the way of an actual plotline, opting more for some quick giant doggy slapstick, but according to an official synopsis from Paramount, Emily will need to protect Clifford from an unscrupulous genetics company looking to kidnap him and use his DNA to create a way to super-size animals. As an interesting fun fact, the trailer’s backing music is “Dynamite,” one of the latest hit tracks from Kpop sensation BTS, which is probably a contributing factor to the trailer’s trending status as of writing.

Clifford the Big Red Dog is slated to hit theaters on September 17, 2021. The film’s official Twitter is running a charity drive, wherein every like the trailer tweet gets means another $1 donation for Best Friends Animal Society.
