Chrissy Teigen Under Fire for Lavish ‘Squid Game’ Party

Onlookers have pointed out that the party misses the point of the show.

When something becomes sufficiently popular, its particular image becomes more prominent than any story or message it may convey. Case in point, Netflix’s hit South Korean drama Squid Game is about debt-ridden people putting their lives on the line just for a chance to have a normal life again, all while a cabal of absurdly wealthy watch from afar with detached interest. There’s a message there on the worth of humanity versus money, which is why it’s kind of awkward when someone throws a huge, opulent party with Squid Game as a theme.

Recently, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend hosted a big shindig at the former’s house, and the entire thing was themed around Squid Game. Guests dressed up in the trademark green tracksuits of the game’s participants, party staff dressed as the masked soldiers, and Teigen herself was decked out in an only slightly unsettling recreation of the Red Light, Green Light animatronic with massive painted-on eyes.

“Where do I even begin!!” Teigen wrote on her Instagram. “what an absolutely epic night. my dream came true of watching my friends fight to the death! dunk tank, musical chairs, hide and seek followed by a very riveting final game of pin the tail on the donkey. @wifeoftheparty you truly are the best and have THE BEST team ever. Thank you thank you thank you!!”

Friends and fans of Teigen commented that the party looked like a fun time, though many onlookers noted that holding a big shindig themed after a show about the suffering of the impoverished is in slightly bad taste.

“This is so beyond tone deaf as a millionaire to invite your rich friends over and reenact squid games which is rooted in the violence of capitalism,” an Instagram user commented.

“I love this… But I’m also getting rich white men watching the glass bridge episode vibes,” commented another.
