Schitt’s Creek star expresses deep regret for dressing up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, addressing a sensitive issue.

S Creek actress Emily Hampshire has publicly apologized for her Halloween costume that sparked controversy. Hampshire and a friend dressed up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, characters from a high-profile defamation trial. The costume, which included references to sensitive legal issues, drew criticism from the public and prompted Hampshire to address the situation.

In a heartfelt statement posted on November 1, Emily Hampshire expressed deep regret for her costume choice. She described it as “one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things” she had ever done. Hampshire acknowledged that she had attempted to make light of a serious matter and emphasized the importance of treating domestic abuse allegations with the seriousness they deserve.

Hampshire stated, “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe.” She also committed to doing better in the future and expressed genuine remorse for her actions.

The controversial costume was themed around Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s defamation trial, which concluded more than a year ago. The trial featured testimonies from both parties regarding allegations of abuse during their marriage. Ultimately, a jury in Virginia awarded Depp compensatory and punitive damages, while Heard was granted compensatory damages as part of her countersuit.

Hampshire’s public apology reflects her understanding of the gravity of the subject matter and her intention to be more responsible in her choices. She chose to delete images of the costume from her social media account and expressed her desire to avoid making light of serious issues in the future.
