The Stranger Things star was upset the first time he read the ingredients on a Nutella jar.
In the past decade, chocolate and hazelnut spread Nutella has become one of the most popular pairings with bread in the western world, right up there with peanut butter and jelly. However, according to actor Noah Schnapp, best known for his role as Will Byers in Stranger Things, the first time he actually checked the nutrition block on his favorite jar of Nutella, he was immensely disappointed.
“Hazelnuts aren’t the main ingredient, and the amount of sugar alone made me realize I wasn’t doing myself any favors,” Schnapp said in an email interview with Page Six.
Schnapp was so disappointed about the lacking contents and composition of Nutella, he took it upon himself to create a better alternative. He has co-founded a new company to sell a vegan alternative to Nutella called “tbh,” which contains natural ingredients and less sugar. The product is also made without palm oil, an ingredient in Nutella that contributes to deforestation in its harvesting.

With the assistance of fintech company Republic, Schnapp has opened a crowdfunding campaign for tbh, encouraging anyone and everyone to invest in the product and switch from Nutella.
“I believe value-aligned investing is more important than focusing only on sustainability because I really believe we can vote with our dollars,” he explained, adding that not all of Republic’s investments are environmentally based, as he loves “social networks and gaming and other things.”
