The guests became guest hosts at the last minute.

Earlier this week, television personality Jimmy Kimmel announced that he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was isolating at home. Surprisingly, this is the second time this month Kimmel has tested positive and been forced to take a break from his show, with the first instance being on May 2. He recovered from that first infection and seemed fine, but it seems COVID pegged him again.

“I’m such a positive person, I tested positive AGAIN. I am feeling fine,” he wrote on Twitter.

To carry last night’s show, Kimmel decided to bump two of his celebrity guests up to guest host status. This is why Wednesday night’s show was hosted by the duo of John Mulaney and Andy Samberg, who were originally coming on to promote their starring roles in Disney’s Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers.

“Thank you so much, it is an honor and a favor to be here,” Mulaney said in their opening monologue. “I guess we should explain why we’re hosting tonight. Remember how Jimmy said he didn’t have COVID but then he said he did have COVID? Well, he was right both times.”

“That’s showbiz, bro,” Mulaney added. “One day you don’t have to do anything. Then you get a text, and you have to do something.”

In addition to an opening monologue, the duo took turns interviewing each other as guest and host, since they were also supposed to be the guests for the night’s show.

“For any of you who don’t like what you’re seeing right now, buckle up, because it’s not gonna get any better,” Samberg joked.
