Johnny Depp made a highly-anticipated and divisive comeback at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival with the premiere of his historical drama Jeanne du Barry. This marked the actor’s first public appearance since his lengthy legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, including a defamation trial.

As Depp stepped onto the red carpet, fans erupted in applause, tears, and shrieks, demonstrating their unwavering support for the actor. Signs declaring their love for Depp and congratulating him were held high, contrasting the growing backlash he has faced both overseas and online throughout the controversy surrounding his personal life.

Jeanne du Barry, a historical romance directed by Maïwenn Le Besco, cast Depp in the role of Louis XV. The film represents a significant milestone for the actor, as it is his first leading role since the legal battles with Heard unfolded. Last summer, Depp emerged victorious in a defamation lawsuit against Heard, with the jury concluding that she had intentionally defamed him through her 2018 op-ed about her experiences as a domestic abuse survivor.

However, Depp’s legal journey hasn’t been entirely in his favor. In 2020, he lost a libel lawsuit against The Sun, with the judge ruling that the publication’s use of the term “wife beater” to describe him was substantially true. Despite the legal setbacks, Depp denies the allegations against him vehemently.

While Depp enjoyed a warm reception from fans at Cannes, online and Heard’s supporters launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #CannesYouNot, criticizing the festival for “celebrating abusers.” This backlash follows similar accusations against the festival and the French film industry for their alleged complacency towards sexual aggressors, with figures such as Roman Polanski and Christophe Ruggia being cited.

Thierry Fremaux, the festival’s chief, addressed the criticism during a press conference, defending Depp’s inclusion and emphasizing the importance of freedom of speech and acting within a legal framework. Fremaux also expressed his disinterest in the Depp v. Heard trial, stating that he cares about Johnny Depp as an actor and not the details of the trial.

Despite the mixed reactions, Depp’s presence at Cannes and his recent lucrative deal with Dior’s men’s fragrance line signal ongoing support for the star. The actor’s return to the spotlight undoubtedly reignited the debate surrounding his personal life and the responsibility of the industry to address allegations of abuse.

As the festival unfolds, the reception of Jeanne du Barry and Depp’s performance will undoubtedly continue to spark discussions about the separation of art from the personal lives of actors and the industry’s approach to addressing allegations of misconduct.
